Gilchrist Reclaims English Billiards Gold at SEA Games, Ending Two-Year Losing Streak

Singaporean cue sports legend Peter Gilchrist has triumphed at the SEA Games, securing the gold medal in the English billiards men’s singles event on Dec. 12 after a dominant 3-0 victory over Myanmar’s Pauk Sa. This win marks a significant comeback for the 57-year-old, ending a two-year period where he lost to Pauk Sa in both the 2022 and 2023 competitions.

A Triumphant Return for a Veteran Player

Gilchrist’s victory at Bangkok’s Thunder Dome was decisive, with scores of 101-48, 102-59, and 100-40. The win is particularly sweet for the Singaporean, who had been seeking to avoid a third consecutive defeat at the hands of the 66-year-old Burmese veteran. This marks Gilchrist’s eighth consecutive final appearance in the event and his 10th SEA Games overall.

The path to gold wasn’t without its challenges. Pauk Sa had previously eliminated fellow Singaporean Karthik Ramaswamy 3-2 in the quarter-finals and then battled through another deciding frame to defeat Thailand’s Yuttapop Pakpoj in the semi-finals. Gilchrist, however, showcased his skill with a 3-0 sweep of Indonesia’s Marlando Sihombing in the last eight, followed by a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Thailand’s Praprut Chaithanaskun in the semi-final.

Dominance in English Billiards Continues

Since 2011, Gilchrist has established himself as a dominant force in English billiards, securing six consecutive men’s singles titles. This latest triumph brings his total medal count at the biennial event to an impressive nine golds, three silvers, and four bronze. His previous successes include golds in both the 100 and 500 points events in 2015.

English billiards, played on a standard snooker table, is a complex game involving three balls – white, yellow, and red. The white and yellow balls alternate as cue balls for each player, while the red ball serves as a common object ball. Players score points through “cannons” (hitting the cue ball into two object balls) and by potting balls. In the current SEA Games format, a player must reach 100 points to win a frame, and the first to win three frames claims the match.

Other Singaporean Results

The day also saw success for Singapore in the women’s snooker 6-red team event, though not at the top of the podium. Charlene Chai and Audrey Chua secured a joint-bronze medal alongside Malaysia after a 3-0 loss (45-24, 69-16, 35-31) to Indonesia’s Emilia Rahmanda and Anabella Yohana in the semi-finals. The Indonesian duo will face Thailand in the final on Dec. 13, vying for the gold medal.

This victory solidifies Peter Gilchrist’s legacy as one of the most decorated cue sports athletes in the region, demonstrating resilience and skill in the face of fierce competition.
