On January 31, examination of the bill begins in the Senate for a second attempt at marriage between the Nuclear Safety Authority and the Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety. But specialists and employees are worried about the risks of the merger.
After the hearing of the bosses of the Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN), the sector watchdog, and the Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), the technical expert, on January 17, the rapprochement between these two entities begins in the Senate this January 31, in committee. The two organizations have a major role in monitoring and authorizing all installations in France (nuclear power plants, fuel enrichment facilities, fuel and waste storage, radiotherapy centers, medical and research laboratories).
For this second merger attempt, the government put together a bill, tabled on December 20 in the Senate, and did not settle for an amendment to the energy law, unlike its first attempt which was rejected by Parliament in March 2023.
