A security guard exploited his position of authority to sexually assault a woman seeking assistance, resulting in a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence. Shazad Mughal, 47, was convicted following a jury trial and sentenced on Friday for offenses committed at Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground in Stretford.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of August 10, 2022, after the victim’s Metrolink tram terminated prematurely, leaving her stranded near the stadium. She approached Mughal for directions to Manchester city center.
Victim Lured Under False Pretenses
According to police reports, Mughal offered the woman access to a toilet within his security hut. He then launched a brutal attack, sexually assaulting her before she managed to escape and contact authorities. The victim remained concealed until police arrived to locate her.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) received a 999 call from the victim at 12:45 a.m. detailing the assault. “On Wednesday 10 August 2022, officers received a 999 call from the victim at 12.45am, who said she had been sexually assaulted,” GMP stated in a release issued on Sunday.
Mughal’s False Claims Dismissed by Jury
During the trial, Mughal attempted to deflect blame, falsely claiming the victim had initiated unwanted advances. Though, the jury unequivocally rejected his account, finding him guilty of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault by penetration.
“Mughal abused his position of authority to sexually assault a woman who had asked him for help,” a statement from GMP read. “Mughal claimed that the victim was advancing onto them whilst in the security booth and that he did not want to have any sexual activity with the victim, which was wholly untrue.”
Police Commend Victim’s Bravery and Pledge Support
Detective Constable Luke Miller, of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, praised the victim’s courage in coming forward and supporting the inquiry. “I would like to thank the victim for reporting this terrible incident to the police and allowing us to conduct a thorough investigation,” Miller said. “I commend the victim in this case for supporting our investigation, which has resulted in today’s sentence and sees justice served against Mughal, who will now spend a significant amount of time behind bars.”
GMP emphasized its commitment to supporting victims of sexual assault and pursuing offenders with unwavering determination. “Our officers will provide support, conduct thorough investigations, and take firm action against offenders. Your allegations will be taken seriously, and you will be treated with dignity and respect.”
Mughal, of Tansley Road, Crumpsall, will serve a ample prison term, sending a clear message that such predatory behavior will not be tolerated.
