Security Guard Rescued After Falling Into Well at New El Salvador Hospital Construction Site

A security guard was successfully rescued early Monday morning after falling into a six-meter well at the construction site of the new El Salvador Hospital in Santiago, Chile. The incident highlights potential safety concerns at the ongoing construction project.

Firefighters responded to an alarm during the early hours of December 22, 2025, after receiving reports of a person trapped in a confined space. Crews discovered a security guard had fallen into a well while conducting a routine nighttime patrol of the construction site.

Three vehicles – from the Santiago Fire Department, SAMU (Chilean medical emergency service), and Providencia municipal security – arrived at the scene to coordinate the rescue effort. According to reports, the worker stepped onto a sewer hatch covered only by a PVC plastic plate, rather than a secure concrete cover, which gave way under his weight.

“The situation was precarious, but our teams were able to quickly and efficiently extract the worker,” stated a senior firefighter on the scene.

After approximately one hour, firefighters successfully rescued the guard, who sustained only minor injuries. He was immediately transported to a local healthcare center for evaluation and monitoring. The incident is currently under investigation to determine the cause and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The new El Salvador Hospital is a major infrastructure project intended to expand healthcare access in the Metropolitan Region. This incident raises questions about adherence to safety protocols at the construction site and the need for stricter oversight to protect workers.
