A devastating injury to veteran forward Tyler Seguin casts a long shadow over the Dallas Stars’ season, perhaps sidelining the longtime player for the remainder of the year. The injury is another meaningful setback for a team already grappling with a mounting injury list.
The injury occurred during Tuesday night’s game against the New York Rangers, stemming from a collision with Rangers defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov. Seguin was unable to continue and required assistance leaving the ice at Madison Square Garden.
“He’s an irreplaceable player for our team,” a Stars goaltender stated Wednesday night following a shutout victory against the New Jersey Devils. “It’s just…feel horrible for him, and he deserved a lot better than that. It’s kind of hard to put into words when you lose a guy like that, and it’s going to take the whole team: forwards, D and goalies.Everyone’s got to be 1% better to try to make up for that loss.”
Seguin’s Injury Adds to Stars’ Injury woes
The torn ACL represents a major blow to the Stars’ forward depth. Coach Glen Gulutzan acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating the team must now focus on moving forward despite the challenges. “There’s lots of injuries piling up and lots of games, so we just got to keep moving forward,” Gulutzan said. “There’s lots of guys that their chance is born from some of this misfortune. We just have to take that away: It’s next guy up, next guy’s opportunity and run with it.That’s what good teams do is they just keep pushing forward with the players that they have.”
This latest injury is particularly disheartening for Seguin, who missed much of last season recovering from hip surgery. He successfully returned for the playoffs, contributing to the Stars’ run to the Western Conference finals. He has been a key member of the Dallas Stars organization as arriving in a trade from the Boston Bruins in 2013.
Team Responds with “Next Man Up” Mentality
Despite the setback, the Stars demonstrated resilience in their game against the Devils, with Nathan Bastian stepping into Seguin’s lineup spot. Captain Jamie Benn was shifted to right wing, playing alongside Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz – a line that accounted for two of the team’s three goals.
“After seeing the grind he went through last year — all the hard work he put in to getting back into the lineup — and then for that to happen again obviously sucks,” Benn said. “It’s not great, and there’s not much you can say to the guy. Just some tough news.”
Hintz echoed the sentiment of team unity, emphasizing the need for adjustment and collective effort. “He’s so crucial for this team on the ice and off the ice,” Hintz said.”But now we just have to adjust and next man up and be ready to play without him for a while.”
Duchene’s Return Could Provide Offensive Boost
Looking ahead, the Stars are hopeful for the return of center Matt Duchene, who has been sidelined with an upper-body injury since mid-October. Gulutzan indicated duchene’s recovery is progressing well and a return could be “sooner than later.”
The coach also highlighted the opportunity for other players to step up and contribute. “You’re going to have to have other guys step up,” Gulutzan said. “If Duchy comes back, he’s going to have to take some of that. [Mavrik Bourque is] going to get more opportunity. There’s going to be more opportunity for more guys, and then you’re going to see who takes it. So you’re not really pigeonholing anybody. You’re just seeing who grabs it.”
The Dallas Stars face a challenging road ahead, but the team appears determined to overcome adversity and continue their pursuit of success, even without one of their most valuable players.
