Ukraine is currently not allowed to use heavy weapons supplied by the West against targets in Russia. So Kiev is developing its own weapons.

After the offensive against the Russian region of Kursk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants to intervene in the war against Russia with a “drone missile” he has developed himself. “Our enemy will (…) learn what the Ukrainian way of retaliation is. Dignified, symmetrical, far-reaching,” he announced on Saturday with a view to the newly developed weapon. The missile, called “Palianyzia,” is faster and more powerful than all domestically produced drones. It has already been used successfully once, said Zelenskyy. He gave no details.

In addition, Zelenskyy mocked Russian President Vladimir Putin in a speech, calling him the “sick old man from Red Square” in reference to Moscow’s most famous square. Putin will not dictate red lines to Ukraine that it must not cross, Zelenskyy said in a video published on Telegram.

The president promoted Army Chief of Staff Colonel General Olexander Syrskyj to the rank of general. This also appears to be Zelenskyj’s reward for the successful invasion of Russian border regions. According to Ukrainian sources, over 90 settlements in the Kursk region have been captured so far.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured Ukraine of Germany’s “continued and unwavering solidarity” on Independence Day. During the phone call, the two politicians also discussed the military and humanitarian situation in Ukraine, said Scholz’s spokesman Steffen Hebestreit. “President Selenskyj thanked the German government for its ongoing military support, particularly in air defense.”
