A groundbreaking, self-sufficient wooden shelter designed by Carlo Ratti Associati is set to premiere as an urban pavilion during the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics before being relocated to the Alps, offering a haven for climbers and trekkers. The bivouac – a small, simple shelter used by mountaineers – represents a new approach to sustainable architecture in remote environments, capable of generating its own power and collecting potable water.

A Response to the Challenges of Remote Mountain Living

The project addresses a critical need for safe and sustainable infrastructure in challenging alpine landscapes. Traditionally, mountain shelters require significant logistical support for energy and water. This new design aims to eliminate that dependency. “The goal is to create a structure that can function autonomously in remote mountain areas,” a company release stated. The design team leveraged advanced digital technology to seamlessly integrate the structure into its natural surroundings.

From 3D Scans to Sustainable Design

The design process began with detailed 3D scans of existing rock formations in the Alps. These scans captured the complex shapes, sizes, and angles of the natural landscape, informing the shelter’s form and ensuring it would withstand the harsh alpine conditions. By mirroring the surrounding geology, the structure minimizes visual impact and maximizes stability.

The resulting prefabricated building is constructed from cross-laminated timber, chosen for its ease of transport via helicopter – a necessity for installation in remote locations. Aerogel insulation provides exceptional thermal protection, while an outer metal layer shields the structure from snow, ice, and wind. A prominent feature is a glass front wall, maximizing natural light and offering panoramic views of the mountains.

Power and Water Independence

The bivouac’s self-sufficiency extends to its energy and water systems. A five-kilowatt photovoltaic system on the roof generates electricity, which is stored in an integrated battery system to ensure continuous operation even during periods of low sunlight. Recognizing the scarcity of water sources in the alpine environment, the shelter employs an innovative air condensation system. This technology extracts moisture from the air, producing several liters of potable water daily – sufficient for a small group of climbers. Network connectivity is also integrated, providing a crucial lifeline for emergency communication.

Blending In, While Remaining Visible

Traditional mountain shelters often utilize bright colors for visibility in adverse weather conditions. Carlo Ratti Associati adopted a different strategy, opting to match the shelter’s exterior tones to the surrounding landscape, reducing visual contrast. To maintain safety, the structure incorporates a red warning light that automatically activates in low-visibility conditions. “This approach allows the shelter to blend with the terrain while remaining visible when needed,” one analyst noted.

A Two-Phase Deployment

The project will unfold in two distinct phases. First, the bivouac will be showcased as a temporary pavilion in Milan during the 2026 Winter Olympics, offering the public a firsthand look at this innovative design. Following the games, the structure will be carefully dismantled, airlifted to its permanent location in the Alps, and reassembled on the mountain terrain. There, it will serve as a fully functional, self-sufficient shelter for mountaineers and trekkers.

The structure provides essential space for rest, sleep, and protection from the elements, representing a significant advancement in sustainable alpine architecture.
