For actress and activist Selma Blair, the act of dressing for bed has evolved from a simple nightly routine into a vital ritual of recovery and self-preservation. After years of navigating the complexities of a chronic illness, Blair is translating that personal journey into a tangible form of comfort through a recent collaboration with Mersea, a Kansas City-based lifestyle brand.
The partnership has resulted in the Selma Blair Mersea pajama capsule, titled “Sea La Vie.” This limited-edition collection of 14 pieces is designed to frame sleepwear not merely as clothing, but as a modern self-care ritual. The line, which blends luxury materials with deeply personal motifs, marks Blair’s first foray into fashion design.
The collaboration is rooted in a history of mutual support. Mersea, founded in 2013 by co-owners Melanie Bolin and Lina Dickinson, first entered Blair’s life during one of her most challenging periods. Following her multiple sclerosis diagnosis in August 2018, Blair received a care package of cashmere pieces from the brand while undergoing hospital treatments.
“I was in bed, but in these cashmere pieces. When I was being treated in the hospital, I was also wearing things that felt rich, and I felt taken care of, and it was from these women,” Blair said. “I always wear their things. When I started getting better, I got in touch, and said ‘Would you be interested in doing this collaboration?’”
Design rooted in memory and utility
The “Sea La Vie” collection is designed to transition seamlessly from the bedroom to a “beach and breakfast” setting, emphasizing versatility for women who may spend significant time recovering at home. The 14-piece capsule includes jumpers, button-down tops, shorts, and cotton sets, as well as accessories like a sleeping mask, scarf, and blanket.
Central to the collection is a vintage-style bed jacket, a specific request from Blair inspired by her mother’s wardrobe. Blair noted the practical utility of the garment, particularly for those receiving medical visitors or needing a layer of warmth that does not restrict movement like a traditional nightgown.
Blair’s personal narrative is woven into the finer details of the garments. The line features embroidered self-love motifs, a bandana honoring her service dog, Scout, and silk pajamas adorned with prints of her own lips. She also wrote the copy for the collection’s internal notes and “sayings,” including “XOXO” and “The lucky one” inscribed on drawstrings.
The materials were selected for both luxury and healing, utilizing luxe satins and 100 percent cotton. The design process took between nine and 10 months, conducted primarily via Zoom between Blair and the Mersea executives. The resulting line is available in sizes XS to XL, with pricing ranging from $38 for the sleeping mask to $178 for the bed jacket.

Advocacy and the recovery of stamina
Beyond the aesthetics of the clothing, the capsule serves a philanthropic purpose. Ten percent of the profits from the “Sea La Vie” collection will benefit the American Brain Foundation, where Blair serves as a global ambassador and national chair for Brain Health.
Blair spoke candidly about the psychological toll of chronic illness and the isolation exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. She described the process of designing the collection as a way to “stretch the muscle” of creativity and social interaction after a period of withdrawal.
“I’ve been having to learn stamina again and to seize better care of myself,” Blair said, noting that the spirit of the Mersea founders served as an inspiration. She observed that many people lost their momentum for engaging with the outside world during the pandemic, and that the act of putting on a “nice pair of pajamas” can be a step toward reclaiming that joy.
Future projects and physical recovery
While the “Sea La Vie” capsule is a limited release, Blair expressed an interest in expanding her design work to a full wardrobe, provided the initial collection is well-received. This venture follows another limited-edition collaboration with Benny’s Eyewear.
Blair is also returning to the screen, with plans to begin filming a movie titled “Ethan Almighty.” The project focuses on a real-life hero dog that survives significant odds to change the life of an adopted human. To prepare for the physical demands of filming, Blair has been training in boxing with the renowned trainer Freddie Roach to further build her physical stamina.
The “Sea La Vie” collection is currently available online, with the partners considering select resort stores for future distribution. Additional holiday-season releases from Mersea are expected to follow.
