New York’s Wine and Craft Beverage Industries: A $12 Billion Economic Engine
New York State’s wine and craft beverage industries are experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, generating over $12 billion in economic impact and supporting tens of thousands of jobs, particularly within the Finger Lakes region. This success story, fueled by strategic public-private partnerships and a commitment to quality, is reshaping the state’s economic landscape.
A Booming Industry Across the State
The resurgence of New York’s wine and grape industry, coupled with the rapid expansion of craft breweries, cideries, and distilleries, represents one of the state’s most significant economic achievements of the past generation. According to reports from the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, this sector delivers substantial returns through tax revenue, job creation, and rural economic development. The industry currently generates more than $6.65 billion in direct economic impact, sustains 71,950 jobs, and contributes $1.12 billion in state and local taxes annually. Furthermore, over 4.71 million tourists visit New York wineries each year, spending a total of $1.33 billion.
Finger Lakes Region Leads the Way
The Finger Lakes region is at the epicenter of this growth. This month, the 39th annual New York Wine Classic recognized Weis Vineyards of Hammondsport as “Winery of the Year” for the second consecutive year and the third time overall. The award acknowledges the winery’s consistent excellence based on the level and number of awards received.
“We’re incredibly honored, and still a little shocked, to be named Winery of the Year for the third time,” said Peter and Ashlee Weis, Winemaker and Owners of Weis Vineyards. “It’s a true privilege to be recognized among so many outstanding New York producers. This award is a nod to the passion and hustle of our amazing team and grape growers; none of this would be possible without them. And to our community: thank you for cheering us on every step of the way.”
In addition to this prestigious honor, Weis Vineyards also received “Best in Category” awards for its 2024 Grüner Veltliner (Best White Wine) and 2024 Dry Rosé (Best Pink Wine). Billsboro Winery (2023 Après, Best Dessert Wine) and Montezuma Winery (Crimson Queen Cranberry & Rhubarb, Best Specialty Wine) also earned “Best in Category” recognition, demonstrating the widespread success of Finger Lakes wineries. Expanding Beyond Wine: The Rise of Craft Beverages
The success extends beyond wine. New York State currently boasts more licensed breweries than ever before in its history. The New York State Brewers Association (NYSBA) reports a growth from 95 breweries in 2012 to over 535 in 2023. New York State craft beer ranks fourth nationally, generating a $5.4 billion economic impact. Production increased from 557,436 barrels in 2011 to 1,257,395 barrels in 2021.
Continued Support is Crucial
Legislative support will be vital to sustaining this momentum. Efforts to solidify these world-class industries, alongside agriculture, small business, and tourism, are ongoing throughout the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions, and statewide. Continued commonsense steps and regulatory reforms are needed to support growth, create jobs, and unlock further economic opportunities.
These industries are not merely economic drivers; they provide sustainable livelihoods for thousands of New Yorkers and serve as cornerstones for local communities throughout the state.
