Istanbul‘s Stray Cat Dilemma: A Resident’s Plea for Public Health and Safety
A growing tension simmers in Istanbul as the city’s ubiquitous street cats increasingly encroach on businesses and personal space, raising concerns about hygiene and public health. The issue, while potentially unpopular, highlights a critical need for balance between animal welfare and the well-being of residents and visitors.
For 20 years, one Istanbul resident has witnessed the proliferation of street cats, observing them as a constant presence throughout the city. while often keeping to themselves, these felines have become increasingly bold, freely roaming and,in some cases, overstepping boundaries. “They are everywhere and usually keep to themselves, watching you with an aloof air of superiority while freely roaming every corner of the city,” the resident recounts.
The breaking point arrived on Christmas Eve. While attempting to enjoy a quiet moment with a pumpkin spice latte at a local cafe, the resident encountered a notably assertive feline.”Heading to church for a special Mass after work,I had stopped by my favourite cafe… Across from me,perched like he owned the place, was a mini-lion-size gray tabby on the plush bench.”
What began as a shared space quickly escalated. Despite a clear desire for distance, the cat repeatedly approached, eventually leaping onto the table and then onto the resident’s lap. “His ear twitched. He definitely heard me, sensing my disdain. But, like every Istanbul feline allowed in places they shouldn’t be, he was a tiny entitled terrorist.” The situation culminated in a painful scratch, requiring a trip to the emergency room for rabies and tetanus shots.
The incident underscores a broader issue: the normalization of unsanitary conditions and potential health risks. The resident draws a stark comparison, stating that a city-strolling cat is akin to “taking off my shoes after wearing them in public toilets and on sidewalks and setting them tread-down directly on the table, then serving you a piece of chocolate cake and a latte on the unsanitized surface.”
The experience highlighted the lack of concern from the cafe owner, who dismissed the situation by noting the cat likely didn’t have rabies. This nonchalant attitude, the resident argues, is commonplace. “Business owners in the city have forgotten that safety and health are more important than the comfort of strays.” Stray cats are routinely allowed inside supermarkets, malls, and restaurants, creating a potentially hazardous surroundings.
The resident’s emergency room visit revealed the extent of the problem. “There are special wards in emergency rooms in Istanbul to handle encounters with stray animals. That’s right. That is how frequently they threaten public safety.” Alongside individuals with severe injuries, the waiting room was filled with others seeking treatment for animal encounters. The cost of preventative treatment, ranging from $11 to $46 per shot, and requiring a series of four, adds a financial burden to those affected.
Despite a personal preference for dogs, the resident emphasizes that the issue isn’t about disliking cats, but about appropriate boundaries. “However, love or hate, there is no doubt that there are appropriate spaces for them to be, or not to be.” The current situation, fueled by social pressure to embrace the city’s feline population, has created a climate where
