Senegal, DR congo, and Tanzania Advance in Africa Cup of Nations; Historic Run for Tanzania
Senegal, teh reigning African champions, advanced too the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations as group D winners, while the Democratic Republic of Congo faces a challenging matchup against Algeria. In a historic moment, Tanzania secured their first-ever qualification for the AFCON knockout rounds.
Senegal topped their group on goal difference after a decisive 3-0 victory over Benin in Tangier. Goals from Abdoulaye Seck and Habib Diallo, alongside a late penalty converted by cherif Ndiaye, sealed the win for the Lions of Teranga, despite a red card shown to captain Kalidou Koulibaly. Concurrently, DR Congo also secured a 3-0 win against Botswana in Rabat.
The DR Congo’s victory was largely fueled by an outstanding performance from former Chelsea playmaker Gael kakuta, who scored two goals and provided an assist. Kakuta set up Nathanael Mbuku for the opening goal and later converted a penalty. However, a fourth goal scored by Fiston Mayele was disallowed by VAR due to a handball. the close nature of the group standings briefly raised the possibility of a drawing of lots to determine final positions, but Senegal ultimately prevailed with a two-goal advantage.

In a landmark achievement, Tanzania qualified for the knockout stage for the first time in their history, drawing 1-1 with Tunisia in Rabat. Ismael Gharbi gave Tunisia the lead with a penalty,but Feisal Salum equalized for Tanzania. Despite remaining winless in 12 matches across four AFCON appearances, Tanzania’s qualification was secured by a superior goal record over Angola.They will face a daunting challenge against hosts and title favorites Morocco in Rabat on Sunday.
“We did not have enough time to prepare the team, but worked together with the federation,” said Argentina-born Tanzania coach miguel Gamondi. “I feel very proud, not just for myself, but for the country. To qualify is great for Tanzania.”
Nigeria maintained a perfect record in Group C with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Uganda. Paul onuachu opened the scoring, and Raphael Onyedika added a brace after Uganda’s goalkeeper, Salim Magoola, was sent off for handling the ball outside the area. Nigeria will meet the third-placed team in Group F-currently Mozambique-on Monday in Fes.
