Sentimental Value Wins Big at European Film Awards | Film

Joachim Trier’s Sentimental value Dominates European Film awards, Oscar Prospects Rise

The Norwegian drama Sentimental Value swept the European Film awards on Saturday, January 20, 2024, in Berlin, securing all five major accolades – best film, best director, best screenplay, best actor, and best actress. This resounding victory positions the film as a strong contender for recognition at the upcoming Academy Awards in March.

Sentimental Value, which previously earned the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival last year, tells the story of an aging filmmaker, portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård,attempting to enlist his estranged daughter, played by Renate Reinsve, for his final cinematic work. The film’s meta-narrative and compelling performances clearly resonated with the European Film Academy, resulting in a clean sweep of the top prizes. Joachim Trier accepted awards for both best film and best director. The screenplay credit was shared by Trier and Eskil Vogt, while Hania Rani was recognized for her remarkable composing.

the European Film Academy often champions cultural diversity as a defining characteristic, setting it apart from the commercially-driven American film industry. However, the association’s awards have increasingly tended to favor a single, dominant film, a pattern observed in recent years with Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a fall in 2023 and Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez in 2024. This year’s ceremony continued that trend.

Spanish director Oliver Laxe’s Sirāt also enjoyed a successful night, garnering five awards, including recognition for its innovative sound design and a brooding techno score. The film’s editor,Cristóbal Fernández, accepted an award on Laxe’s behalf.

Despite multiple nominations – three each – both Iranian films, Food for Thought and My Beloved Man, went home empty-handed.Here’s a complete list of the winners:
