At the site, President Vučić stated: “And now we are talking to the Europeans with whom we are working on this section, there will be significantly more money, all together with the ring road around Niš and everything else, I estimate that it will be somewhere around 430 million euros. From this, we will receive for this section Nis – Dimitrovgrad, plus for the ring road and for all the three parts we are talking about, about 108 million euros from Europe, as a gift,” said Vucic
On his page, Vucic wrote: “Today is a great day for us, which shows everything we do in SE Serbia. I am grateful to everyone who implements this project, to the European Commission, which gave us a lot of money to develop our Serbia…Thank you European friends for the cooperation, which we highly appreciate. This project is crucial not only for Pirot County, but also for Belgrade and for all of Serbia.”
Trace runs on 36 hour windows, meaning that traffic is interrupted for 36 hours. During this time, about 500 to 600 meters of railway are completed, after which traffic is restored for 72 hours. The Executive Director of Trace, Eng. Boyan Delchev informed: “From April 2024, we will start working with two teams, which will allow us to achieve 1000 meters per window”. The railway line His – Tsaribrod (Dimitpovgad) is the only railway section in the entire length of the inter-sea Kopidop X, which is not electrified. The railway line currently does not have a contact network, but is only diesel-powered. After the completion of the project, there will already be a contact network, which means that the locomotives will also move with electric traction. We have work to do in the gorge tunnels. The project is financed by the European Investment Bank. Part of the funds are gratuitous and come from the EC’s Investment Framework for the Western Balkans.
Trace also implements another railway project in Serbia, financed by the EIB – modernization of the Nis-Brestovac railway line, which is almost 60% completed. If everything goes according to plan, in 2025 we will finish Nis-Brestovac, and in 2027 we will finish Nis-Dimitrovgrad, commented Prof. Nikolay Mihailov, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of “Trace Group Hold” AD.
Serbian railways are part of pan-European transport and have been in need of serious modernization in recent years.
