Friday, March 1, a 23-year-old young man was sentenced to seven months in prison for stealing the bag of a Paris town hall engineer where there were notes related to the Olympic Games.

If the legal reaction was almost immediate, so was the panic. The theft took place on Monday 26: the engineer in question was traveling on a train in the Paris region and had left his luggage in the luggage compartment above him. He went to file a complaint when he realized the bag was missing.

There, concerns quickly rose, particularly because a police source indicated that the bag contained a computer and two USB keys with security plans for the Paris Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11. Except it wasn’t.

On Wednesday, the Paris prosecutor’s office clarified these first elements of the investigation, deploring “hasty publications” in the press and ensuring that the USB key did not contain notes “on sensitive security devices”.

The flagrant investigation made it possible to arrest a suspect “already known” for thefts on public transport, notably at the beginning of January. The defendant appeared in court on Friday. In addition to the theft as a repeat offender, he was also tried for refusing to hand over his telephone code to the judicial authorities, according to the same source.

As reported by AFP, the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo asked the city’s general inspectorate on Wednesday to investigate these “proven breaches of internal security procedures”. The town hall is considering “sanctions” depending on the conclusions that are drawn.
