Initially, it was reported that six people were killed and eight injured, but now the number of victims has increased.

A civilian container ship with a Panamanian flag was hit in the attack, Kiper said.

“Unfortunately, the number of dead in yesterday’s Russian missile strike has increased to seven,” Kiper said on social media on Thursday.

“A 46-year-old port worker died in hospital this morning. Doctors did everything possible, but his injuries were too severe,” he added.

“This is the third attack on a civilian ship in the last four days,” the district chief said earlier.

Russia has attacked ships and grain silos in the Odesa region during the war. Ukraine has described the attacks as an illegal attempt to destroy its export capabilities.

Ukraine was one of the world’s largest grain exporters before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Repeated attacks on Ukrainian ports and grain warehouses have significantly reduced Ukraine’s grain exports.

The new attack came two days after a Russian missile hit a Palau-flagged ship in the port of Odessa, killing one person.
