“Ignorance”, a web-series produced by young people from the Zou department, was born. This 10-episode production is funded by UNICEF and the Ministry of Health. It highlights the challenges that young people face in relation to sexual and reproductive health.

Risky choices in the absence of sex education

Like Alida, Esther and Coralie, the actresses in this series, many young people, for lack of information about their sexuality, jeopardize their future. Unwanted abortions, STIs and teenage pregnancies are common among young people without sex education.

Faced with this reality, a group of young people from Bohicon decided to take action through this film to raise awareness among their peers. The objective is to attract the attention of young adolescents and transmit appropriate information to them through digital means, indicated Oswald Wankpo, on behalf of the initiators.

Digital as an awareness tool

The series will be broadcast on social media to educate and inform adolescents about sexual and reproductive health. “Exercising one’s rights, whether to education, to quality health or to protection, in particular against violence, begins first with information and the possibility, (…) to decide for oneself of his destiny”, said UNICEF Representative Djanabou Mahondé. She is committed to supporting such initiatives to break down the barriers of ignorance and empower young people to make informed decisions.

Present at the film screening ceremony in Cotonou, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Angélique Kidjo encouraged young people for their efforts in favor of sexual and reproductive health education.
