Multiple Incidents Mar Race, Rookie Horse Faces Further Scrutiny

A series of bumping incidents and challenging racing conditions characterized the recent race, prompting a stewards’ inquiry and raising concerns about the performance of a first-time starter. Several horses experienced difficulties during the event, leading to advisories for jockeys and a requirement for additional training for one runner.

Chaotic Start and Early Positioning Battles

(L007) with Z Purton aboard, “shifted in abruptly at the start and was bumped.” COOL BOY (L014) also suffered a bump from GEORGIAN SIGMA as the race commenced.

Chadwick reported being instructed to secure a forward position, aiming to follow GEORGIAN SIGMA, but his mount lacked the initial pace to do so. This resulted in LIGHT YEARS GLORY being forced to race wide and without cover for much of the event, exhibiting a tendency to hang in during the race. Trainer W K Mo confirmed the initial instructions.

Mid-Race Crowding and Jockey Advisories

Further incidents unfolded as the race progressed. Near the 900-meter mark, GEORGIAN SIGMA made contact with RUBY THRIVE when the latter shifted out slightly. A separate incident involving ELITE GOLF (L023) highlighted the challenges faced by runners. While being steadied to position behind SALON S (K585), ELITE GOLF was crowded by RUBY THRIVE, which had been “racing greenly” and made contact with GEORGIAN SIGMA.

Stewards resolute that the primary cause of this crowding was RUBY THRIVE’s inexperience, but advised Purton to ensure sufficient racing room for other horses. ELITE GOLF also “had difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the 300 metres.”

Unacceptable Racing Manners and future Requirements for Ruby Thrive

the performance of RUBY THRIVE (L098), a first-time starter ridden by C Y ho, drew notable concern. The horse “made contact with the right side of its starting gate” and subsequently “raced ungenerously throughout the event,” becoming unbalanced and checked near the 900-meter mark.

the stewards deemed RUBY THRIVE’s racing manners and overall performance “unacceptable.” Consequently, the horse will be required to “perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination” before being allowed to race again.

Additional Incidents and Post-Race Procedures

Several other horses experienced disruptions throughout the race. FALCON HUNTER (K503) became unbalanced after being bumped at the start and raced wide until the 700-meter mark. Jockey C L Chau explained an attempt to find cover after being positioned wide early on. FOREVER FANCY (K354) was bumped by TURIN CHAMPIONS (L024) at the start and faced crowding near the 350-meter mark, prompting advisories for both J Orman and M Chadwick to exercise more caution.

WORD OF KINDNESS (K569) experienced balance issues and bumping incidents, while SUPER DRAGON (K389) was briefly held up on the home turn and again between the 400 and 250-meter marks. SALON S and SUPER DRAGON were both sent for post-race sampling.

The race highlighted the unpredictable nature of thoroughbred racing and the importance of both horse and rider composure in navigating challenging conditions.
