Following this, former judge and freedom fighter Mohammad Shahabuddin was announced as the candidate of the ruling Awami League party for the post of President. At the same time, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party did not field a candidate. In this situation, the Election Commission of the country accepted the nomination submitted by Mohammad Shahabuddin for the presidential election. The Election Commission announced that Mohammad Shahabuddin was chosen as the new President of the country as no one else filed nomination papers.
