Mexico City is preparing for a monumental free concert by Shakira on March 1st, marking her return to the city’s Zócalo plaza after nearly two decades. The announcement, made Friday, promises a spectacular event to close out the Mexican leg of her record-breaking “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” tour. This highly anticipated performance will be broadcast live across Shakira’s social media channels, extending the reach of the concert to fans worldwide.
“¡México lindo! ¿Se acuerdan de 2007 cuando canté para ustedes en el Zócalo? Hoy quiero contarles que esa experiencia se va a volver a repetir este domingo 1 de marzo, a las 8:00 de la noche,” Shakira shared in a message to her fans. “You have given me so much, so much and I hope I can supply back a little bit of that love you’ve given me.” The concert is sponsored by Grupo Modelo’s Corona, and the event has already garnered enthusiastic support from Mexico City’s government.
Clara Brugada, the head of government of Mexico City, expressed her excitement, stating, “Shakira is an extraordinary Latin artist who has triumphed worldwide, and here in Mexico, we love her very much.” Brugada shared the news via a video posted on her social media channels, appearing alongside Daniel Concenzo, president of Grupo Modelo. The concert represents a significant cultural moment for the city, and officials are preparing for a massive turnout.
A Historic Return to the Zócalo
Shakira’s previous performance at the Zócalo in 2007 drew an estimated crowd of 210,000 people, surpassing the previous record of 170,000 set by the Mexican rock band Café Tacvba in 2005. The Zócalo, the second largest public square in the world after Tiananmen Square in Beijing, is a historically significant location, serving as a focal point for political, social, and cultural events in Mexico City. Organizers anticipate an even larger crowd this time, given Shakira’s continued global popularity and the success of her current tour.
The upcoming concert is the culmination of a sweeping tour across Mexico that began in March 2025, encompassing 31 dates in various cities, including 12 performances at the Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City. Prior to the Zócalo show, Shakira is scheduled to perform on February 21st in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, and on February 24th in Mérida, Yucatán.
Record-Breaking Tour Continues
Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” tour has already achieved remarkable success, breaking records as the highest-grossing tour of all time by a Latin artist. According to Billboard Boxscore, the tour has generated $421.6 million in revenue from the sale of 3.3 million tickets across 86 shows. This success underscores Shakira’s enduring appeal and her status as a global music icon.
Beyond Mexico, Shakira is also slated to perform in another iconic location: Copacabana Beach in Brazil on May 2nd. Organizers expect over one million attendees, mirroring the crowds drawn by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga in 2025. This series of large-scale, free concerts demonstrates Shakira’s commitment to connecting with her fans directly and providing accessible musical experiences.
The Zócalo’s Legacy of Large-Scale Concerts
The Zócalo has a rich history of hosting major musical events. Currently, the record for the largest attendance at the plaza belongs to the Argentine band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, who drew 300,000 people on June 3, 2023. Grupo Firme holds the second-largest attendance record, with 280,000 fans in attendance a year earlier. Shakira’s upcoming concert has the potential to surpass these numbers and establish a new benchmark for attendance at the Zócalo.
