The death of Shane MacGowan, the leader of the iconic band The Pogues, continues to make headlines. The former punk poet had a very particular last wish: he paid for £10,000 worth of beers at The Thatched Cottage pub where his friends got drunk until dawn after the funeral that took place last Friday.

Shane MacWogan has been faithful to his way of life, in a continuous drunkenness, until his death. Thus, according to the local press, the pub could only be accessed by invitation and was guarded by private security. Among the guests were Johnny Depp, Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream and bandmates from the Pogues, as well as singer Glen Hansard, who performed Fairytale of New York by the Pogues inside the bar, Nick Cave, or the president Irishman Michael D. Higgins.

«I know that in the pub where they are going to go for food, 10,000 euros have already been given at the counter for free beer; “It was Shane’s last wish,” said several of the guests who knew about the wish.

This particular ‘party’ was preceded by a non-standard funeral and outside the usual canons. The mass will remain in the memory of MacGowan’s devoted followers and his friends gave him a farewell worthy of his character. Few will forget the ‘Fairytale of New York’, one of the most beautiful carols ever written, by Glen Hansard and Lisa O’Neill and to which the attendees ended up dancing in the middle of the ceremony. Also special was the moment when Nick Cave performed the emotional ‘A Rainy Night in Soho’ with a completely silent church.
