If you want to let guests into the WiFi, you often have to spell awkwardly. This also works in a flash – with a QR code. Here’s how to create it yourself.

You should also assign a secure password on your home network – and that usually means long, complicated character strings. If a visitor needs internet access on their mobile device for a “quick time”, entering the password is a pain.

This can be done effortlessly and within seconds – with a QR code. QR codes are the successors to barcodes. They can also be read using a reader or cell phone camera. And so a quick scan with the smartphone camera is enough to automatically register a WLAN with the password in the cell phone.

Dial in quickly with the camera app

Router manufacturer AVM includes a card with its Fritzboxes on which a QR code is printed in addition to the preset router name and password. Users simply need to open the camera app with an iPhone. If the QR code appears in the viewfinder, a window opens asking whether you want to connect to the WLAN in question.

On Android, users usually need a corresponding app. “Barcode Scanner” or “Barcode & QR Scanner barcoo” are each available for free in the Google Play Store. If “Google Lens” is integrated into the camera app, detection works automatically like on the iPhone.

Create your own QR code

But users don’t need a Fritzbox to conveniently dial into the network – it works with any router. Users can quickly create the appropriate QR code themselves. This is easy with the pure JS WiFi QR Code Generator. The code is generated there directly in the browser and is not sent to any cloud service.

There, users simply enter the network name (SSID) of the WLAN and their password. The generated code can then be printed out or exported as an image file – then it can be saved on the cell phone and shown for scanning if necessary.

Alternatively, users can also use any other QR code generator. In order for the code to be automatically recognized as WLAN access by the cell phone, users must adhere to the following formatting:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:NAME;P:PASSWORT;;

If your own WLAN is called “MyWLAN” and the password is “123456”, then you would have to enter the following into a QR code generator:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:MeinWLAN;P:123456;;

The corresponding QR code would then look like this. If you want to try it out, you can scan it directly from the screen.

With such a code, you can now visit your home WiFi within seconds. However, you should think carefully about whether you really want to allow outsiders access to your own network.

Set up guest WiFi

Many routers therefore offer guest access as an alternative. This is a separate network that offers access to the Internet, but not to all other devices in the home network. You can find out how to set up a guest WLAN in the instructions for your router. You can find step-by-step instructions for setting up the widely used Fritzbox routers from AVM here.

You can often set additional restrictions and filters for the guest WiFi. You can also turn the guest WiFi on and off as needed. This way you can ensure that it is not used unnoticed over the long term.
