Sheffield Wednesday Sack Henrik Pedersen After Doncaster Defeat

Sheffield Wednesday sacked head coach Henrik Pedersen after less than 15 months in charge on Sunday, following a 2-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers that left the League One club eighth in the standings.

Doncaster Rovers Defeat Prompts Dismissal at Hillsborough

League One side Sheffield Wednesday parted ways with head coach Henrik Pedersen following a run of poor results that culminated in a 2-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers in a South Yorkshire derby on Saturday. The loss marked the second successive league defeat for the Owls after a 2-0 reverse against Notts County earlier in the week.

Pedersen’s tenure at Hillsborough lasted less than 15 months. During Saturday’s match, supporters called for the 48-year-old to leave after watching their side concede twice inside the opening 17 minutes. The sequence extended a difficult run that saw Wednesday secure just one win in six league matches while failing to score in four of those fixtures. The club currently sits eighth in League One, standing two points off the play-off places after 11 matches.

Wednesday Sacks Pedersen After Poor Results

Wednesday announced the departure in a statement issued shortly before 1.45pm on Sunday afternoon. The club acknowledged that Pedersen led the team through a turbulent era of organizational shifts.

Sporting Director Simon Wilson expanded on the decision, noting that while management anticipated a challenging start due to the scale of change across the club, results and performances fell short of expectations.

Although we have accumulated points, we haven’t seen enough progress in those areas. We believe making a change now gives us the best opportunity to establish those foundations and build towards the second half of the season and beyond.

Matt Hamshaw Takes Interim Charge

Speaking after the Doncaster defeat, Pedersen acknowledged the friction between the team’s output and supporter expectations in an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield.

To steady the squad, Wednesday confirmed that Matt Hamshaw will take interim charge until a permanent successor is appointed. Hamshaw joined the coaching staff in August after being sacked by Rotherham United.
