Ten Points Separate MotoGP Leaders After Jorge Martin Crash

Ten points separate the world championship leaders after Aprilia rider Jorge Martin crashed during the Australian Grand Prix Sprint at Phillip Island on October 24, 2026. The 2024 champion sustained a non-displaced fracture of his right wrist, ruling him out of the main race and leaving his participation at Sepang uncertain.

Martin Crash at Phillip Island Upends the Title Fight

The high-speed tumble on lap eight of the Saturday sprint abruptly halted a fierce duel for the lead between Aprilia Racing rider Jorge Martin and his championship rival, Marc Marquez. Racing through the circuit, Martin slid through the gravel, ending his afternoon and sending him directly to the circuit medical center where doctors initially suspected potential damage to both the radius and ulna near the right wrist.

Born in Madrid, Spain, on Jan. 29, 1998, Martin initially gained widespread notice by claiming victory in the 2014 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup before advancing through the Moto3 and Moto2 categories. He won the Moto3 world championship in 2018, recording seven victories that season, and his performances helped establish him as one of Spain’s promising racing talents. Having stepped up to the premier class with Pramac Racing in 2021, he captured his maiden MotoGP triumph later that year at the Styrian Grand Prix. His speed in qualifying and aggressive racing style quickly made him a competitive presence in the championship before finishing second in the 2023 standings and securing the 2024 world championship after finishing third at the season-ending Solidarity Grand Prix in Barcelona, recording three Grand Prix victories and 16 podium finishes. He joined Aprilia Racing for the 2025 season after winning the championship with Pramac, with his recovery and return to competitive form becoming important priorities as he prepared for the 2026 campaign.

Subsequent imaging tests in Melbourne brought a measure of relief. A CT scan confirmed a non-displaced fracture of the distal radius while ruling out any secondary break in the ulna. Because the bone remained properly aligned, medical teams determined that surgery would not be necessary, allowing the rider to remain outside of Spain for his ongoing care.

Rain Freezes the Standings at Ten Points

While the Saturday sprint victory propelled Marquez to a 10-point advantage in the riders’ standings, severe weather at Phillip Island intervened before Sunday’s Grand Prix could begin. Heavy rain and poor visibility delayed warm-up sessions before officials officially canceled the main race, preventing Marquez from extending his lead further while Martin sat on the sidelines as an unfit entry.

Targeting a Rapid Return for the Sepang Grid

With four rounds remaining in the season, attention immediately turned to whether the Spanish rider can mount a swift comeback at the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. Team management noted that treatment over the coming days will center on physiotherapy, including magnetotherapy to accelerate bone healing without surgical intervention.

Despite yesterday’s crash, this morning we saw him doing well. We remain very positive. The goal is to see him back in Sepang.

Paolo Bonora, Aprilia Team Manager

Despite the optimistic outlook from the Aprilia garage, team officials emphasized that a definitive green light depends entirely on daily evaluations and official medical clearance from circuit doctors ahead of Friday practice.
