The head of the Supreme Council of Fezzan Tribes, Sheikh Ali Abu Sabiha, was released after about 3 months of his arrest by Haftar’s forces.
Abu Sabiha was arrested by the Internal Security Service in Sabha in mid-April, without any explanation for the reasons.
Despite Abu Sabiha’s release, the party that kidnapped him – the Internal Security Service in Sabha, affiliated with Haftar – did not announce the reasons for his arrest. It was also not clear whether Abu Sabiha was brought before the Public Prosecution during his arrest, served a specific period, or was released for his innocence.
Abu Sabiha was released through mediation by the notables of the Hasawna tribe in southern Libya, after their visit to Benghazi and their meeting with Khalifa Haftar.
It is noteworthy that Sheikh Abu Sabiha had raised sharp criticism against Haftar’s forces during his detention, as many local and international parties demanded that his fate be revealed and his release be released.
Despite the release of Abu Sabiha, many issues related to freedom of expression and arbitrary detention remain. Since the end of last April, a member of the Constitution Drafting Assembly, Sheikh Al-Zain Al-Arabi Al-Dardir, has been detained after being kidnapped from the Ubari area. His family’s information indicates that he may be transferred to a prison in the city of Benghazi.
Political activists Fathi Al-Baja, Tariq Al-Bishri, and Salem Al-Araibi, along with journalist Nasser Al-Daisi, are still being held since their abduction in early October last year by the Internal Security Service in Benghazi.
