Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the party leaders and activists to break the wall of division between the independent and party candidates in the 12th National Assembly elections and build a fortress of unity.

This strategy had to be taken to contest the elections and to save the country’s democracy, he said, adding that now is the time to build the destiny of the people and take the country forward.

He said this at a special extended meeting of the Awami League at Ganobhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister on Saturday (February 10).

Responsible leaders of Awami League from each district participated in the extended meeting. Separate space is allotted for each section.

Addressing the activists, Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina said, ‘Organization is the main strength. In this year’s election, many people had a conflict or something while doing party and independent elections. What has happened must now be forgotten. Everyone must work together. People should be trusted. And if any problem arises somewhere, the central committee will solve it, we are there.’

‘There should be no suicidal conflict between yourselves. Everyone should be aware of that. Blame it, blame it; This accusation makes no sense. This time it was the tide of the boat. If no one can stand in that tide, whose fault is it? This should be kept in mind. There is no point in blaming.’

He said, if the elections were not open this time, then this election would not only be questioned, but the democracy of Bangladesh would have been hijacked. Where we have progressed in the socio-economic development of Bangladesh, that progress would have been thwarted.

Addressing the critics of the twelfth national parliament election, the president of Awami League said that this year’s twelfth national parliament election was free, fair and impartial. To those who want to question the election and say that the election was not free, my question is to say clearly, what are the areas they are saying that the election was not free, fair and impartial. They have to say that. Without saying that, they are saying that the election was held but it was not free.

It is said at national and international level. In any country, my question to them is – where is the problem, they have to say. Elections have also been held in many developed countries of the world. That election was also not accepted by the opposition. In the post-election violence, there have been even murders. I can say this much, the election in Bangladesh has been completed very smoothly.

Referring to the opening of elections for party candidates, Sheikh Hasina said voters will come and vote for whoever they want. Even though many people say that the election has been contested today, they are unable to question the election. All our leaders and activists should remember this.

In the special extended meeting, the National Committee of Awami League, Central Executive Parliament, Advisory Council members, District/Metropolitan and Upazila/Thana/Paur (Municipalities located in the district headquarters) President-General Secretary of Awami League, Party and independent members of Jatiya Sangsad, Zilla Parishad and Upazila Parishad Party chairmen, party mayors of city corporations and municipalities and central presidents and general secretaries of allied organizations are present.
