Since 2008, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has been supporting the expansion of the cultural base of architecture by selecting three teams of Young Architect Award winners every year among Korean architects under the age of 45 to discover and promote creative and capable young architects.
With this in mind, Shinan-gun held the “Architect Selection Evaluation committee for Shinan-gun Architectural Design” on Wednesday, December 4, targeting a total of 15 teams that have won the Young Architect Award over the past five years, and through this, the ‘Pildong 2-ga’ project was held. ‘Architects Architectural Firm’ was finally selected.
Cho Kyeong-bin (38), the representative of Pildong 2-ga Architects, is the winner of the 2024 Young Architect Award competition in which a total of 40 teams participated. Meanwhile, Shinan-gun published the Shinan Insect Academic Survey Report to determine the current status of insect distribution in the region and prepare effective ecological management measures.
this report will be used as vital data for the conservation and promotion of local biodiversity. As a result of the 2024 survey, it was confirmed that a total of 1,068 species of insects from 14 orders and 138 families live in Shinan-gun.
This is an increase of 169 species in 5 families compared to the 2022 and 2023 survey results. In particular, in this survey, 7 new species were identified, including the anchor-lined wildcatcher, which is a class 1 endangered wild species, 3 species of the class 2 horned beetle and water general, and 4 species unrecorded in Korea (Macroglossum fritzei, Ophiusa olista, Avatha discolor, Sinivotys butliri). It was discovered that insects live there.
In addition, in the survey report, Lepidoptera insects were observed the most with 702 species, followed by Coleoptera (174 species), Hemiptera (88 species), Orthoptera (35 species), Diptera (21 species), and Hymenoptera (18 species).. In addition, there are Dragonflies (9 species), Lacewings (8 species), Mantids (5 species), Cockroaches and Earwigs (2 species each), Lepidoptera, Stick insects, and Serpenta (1 species each). In particular, the four unrecorded species discovered in this survey do not have official national names to date, and Shinan-gun plans to register them in the National Species List by publishing a paper by the first half of next year. previously, in the 2023 survey, 4 unrecorded species and 2 endangered species were newly discovered, and one of them received attention by being named ‘Heuksan bee-tailed park gaksi’.
Based on the survey results, Shinan-gun plans to use them to increase the value of ecological resources and prepare sustainable island ecosystem management measures, and to publicize the importance of local biodiversity by publishing books on Shinan insects and producing international promotional materials. .

The fact that Shinan-gun aims to enhance its cultural and artistic identity through original designs sets a meaningful precedent for public buildings in South Korea.
Editor: It sounds like a groundbreaking initiative. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has been recognizing young talent in architecture as 2008. How has this recognition impacted your career and the architecture scene in general?
Cho: The support for young architects has been a game changer. It opens doors for us to conceive and execute ideas that might otherwise remain on paper. These awards foster a sense of community and encourage collaboration among emerging architects. It’s inspirational to witness the fresh perspectives and innovative designs that younger generations bring to the table.

Cho: My design focused on integrating local culture and natural elements into the architecture.
