India defeated New Zealand by four runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Sturzen method in a rain-shortened second ODI in Wellington on November 7, 2026. Bowled out for 134 first, New Zealand watched India reach 113 for seven in 26 overs before rain halted play permanently, sealing a 2-0 series lead.
Heavy overcast skies and persistent moisture at Sky Stadium in Wellington initially delayed the second ODI, forcing officials to reduce the contest to 47 overs per side. Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl. Both teams retained their playing XIs from the opening fixture, with India deploying Rohit Sharma alongside Gill at the top, followed by Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, wicketkeeper KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Naman Dhir, Anshul Kamboj, Arshdeep Singh, Gurnoor Brar, and Aqib Nabi. New Zealand’s lineup featured Will Young, Tim Seifert, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, wicketkeeper Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, captain Mitchell Santner, Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Blair Tickner, and Jacob Duffy.

Gurnoor Brar Bowls India to Victory
The home side’s batting lineup collapsed under aggressive seam bowling, folding for 134 in 41 overs. Fast bowler Gurnoor Brar delivered a career-best spell of four wickets for 30 runs across ten overs, picking up key scalps including Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips in a single over. Aqib Nabi, Anshul Kamboj, and Axar Patel supported the attack with two wickets each, leaving New Zealand reeling at 53 for five before Daryl Mitchell mounted a lone resistance.
Mitchell anchored the innings with 55 runs off 104 balls, combining with captain Mitchell Santner (31 off 38) for a 59-run sixth-wicket partnership that pushed the total past the century mark, according to ETV Bharat. Once Axar Patel broke the stand by removing Mitchell, the remaining tailenders fell quickly, leaving India a modest target of 135.

KL Rahul Anchors the Run Chase
New Zealand’s new-ball bowlers reduced India to 47 for four inside the powerplay. Jacob Duffy removed Shubman Gill for a golden duck before capturing Virat Kohli for seven runs. Rohit Sharma contributed 23 runs from 28 deliveries with two sixes and two fours before Kyle Jamieson induced an edge to Henry Nicholls.
KL Rahul absorbed the pressure, compiling an unbeaten 26 runs from 38 balls with two fours and two sixes. Shreyas Iyer chipped in with 30 runs off 46 balls, steadying the innings alongside Rahul through a 39-run fifth-wicket partnership before Jamieson dismissed Iyer with a short ball.

Rain Stops Play in Wellington
With India at 113 for seven after 26 overs, precipitation intensified over Sky Stadium, forcing umpires to suspend and eventually terminate the match. Under the Duckworth-Lewis-Sturzen method, India’s par score at 26 overs was 109, putting the visiting side four runs ahead when play stopped.
Shubman Gill expressed dissatisfaction with his team’s aggressive shot selection near the end of the innings.
Four wickets, a match-winning spell, and a well-deserved POTM 👏 Scorecard ▶️ https://t.co/pxZRYf6dYV#TeamIndia | #NZvIND pic.twitter.com/jVFaKU6V2W
We lost two more wickets than expected at the end. We knew that rain might fall afterward. The last two shots we played were not good. If we had lost this match by four or five runs using the DLS method, it would have been very disappointing. But getting the win in the end was great.
