Bobby Shuttleworth Named Head Soccer Coach at Texas A&M Following National Championship Win

Texas A&M University has appointed Bobby Shuttleworth as its new head soccer coach, the school’s Director of Athletics, Trev Alberts, announced on Tuesday. Shuttleworth arrives in College Station fresh off a national championship victory with Florida State University, poised to lead one of the most historically successful programs in collegiate soccer.

A Proven Winner Joins the Aggies

The hiring signals a new era for Texas A&M soccer, with Alberts expressing confidence in Shuttleworth’s ability to elevate the program. “We are very excited to welcome Bobby and his family to Aggieland and have him lead us in this new era of Texas A&M soccer,” Alberts said. “Bobby is a proven winner both as a coach and player with a track record of developing high-level talent. His strong leadership and competitive vision give him a great understanding of what it takes to be successful at this level. We are confident Bobby will elevate our program while supporting our student-athletes both athletically and academically.”

Shuttleworth himself expressed his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity. “I am incredibly excited and truly humbled to accept the role of Head Soccer Coach at Texas A&M University,” he stated. “My family and I are deeply grateful for the opportunity to join a place that means so much to so many, and we look forward to becoming part of the Aggie community. Texas A&M has a proud and successful history, built on a tradition of excellence, commitment and relentless pursuit of winning. It is an honor to be entrusted with leading such a respected program. I am eager to build on that legacy and serve this university, our student athletes, and the 12th Man with passion, integrity and pride.”

From Championship Success at Florida State

Shuttleworth’s move to Texas A&M comes immediately after helping Florida State secure the national championship with a 1-0 win over Stanford. He spent the last four seasons with the Seminoles, the last two as associate head coach, contributing to a period of sustained success. During his tenure, FSU claimed NCAA titles in both 2023 and 2022, and reached the College Cup in 2022.

A key aspect of Shuttleworth’s coaching at Florida State was his development of goalkeepers. In the national championship game, netminder Kate Ockene delivered a standout performance, recording nine saves despite being outshot 18-8.

The Seminoles’ record under Shuttleworth was impressive, boasting a 70-7-12 overall record and a nation-leading winning percentage of .854. In 2023, the coaching staff, including Shuttleworth, was recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as the National Coaching Staff of the Year, following an undefeated season for FSU. The team also achieved a 30-6-4 record in the highly competitive ACC conference.

Postseason Dominance and Professional Background

Florida State’s postseason performance under Shuttleworth was particularly noteworthy, with a 17-1-1 record in NCAA Tournament games over his four seasons. They also secured three ACC Tournament championships from 2022-2024, posting a 5-0-3 record in those matches.

Prior to his coaching career, Shuttleworth enjoyed a distinguished 14-year professional playing career as a goalkeeper in Major League Soccer (MLS). He played 232 regular season matches for the New England Revolution, Minnesota United FC, Chicago Fire FC, and Atlanta United, ranking 13th all-time among MLS goalkeepers. He accumulated 81 wins and 53 clean sheets, and reached the MLS Cup Final with the New England Revolution in 2014.

Shuttleworth began his coaching journey while still playing professionally, serving as an assistant coach for the men’s team at Bentley University from 2010-2016.

Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

The Tonawanda, New York, native inherits a program with a rich history. The Aggies are the only team in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the state of Texas to have surpassed 500 career wins, entering the 2026 campaign with a storied legacy.

Shuttleworth is committed to upholding this tradition. “I am committed to honoring the winning tradition that has defined Texas A&M soccer by continuing to compete for championships at the highest level,” he said. “We will strive to develop top-level players while also helping them grow as students, leaders, teammates and individuals of high character. Our goal is to create an environment where student athletes are challenged to reach their full potential on the field while being fully supported in their personal, academic and life development off it.”

Before attending Florida State, Shuttleworth enjoyed a prolific playing career at the University of Buffalo, where he remains the school’s all-time leader in goals against average and recorded 21 wins, earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration.
