A 19-year-old woman in Sicily, Italy, has made a miraculous recovery after undergoing nearly two hours of continuous cardiac massage following a severe bout of the flu, underscoring the possibly life-threatening nature of influenza infections. From Lapland to the ICU: A Rapid Decline
The young woman, identified as Giada, contracted the flu during a trip to Lapland in November. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to an urgent admission to the hospital in a coma and on the brink of succumbing to myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. This quickly progressed to cardiorespiratory arrest, necessitating immediate intervention.
“There were twelve of us, while ten others were ready to take over to control each parameter,” stated a senior member of the hospital’s anesthesia department to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. “The heart was about to give out. You had to believe in it and continue… This time with Giada it was a real miracle.”
Pushing the Limits of Resuscitation
Medical experts generally agree that the effectiveness of cardiac massage diminishes substantially after 30 minutes.Prolonged efforts,while sometimes necessary,carry increased risks of complications.However, the team at Palermo hospital persevered for an astonishing 107 minutes, rotating caregivers to maintain the intensity of the resuscitation efforts.
“In these cases, you have to be sure of the heart’s reaction after ten, twenty, thirty minutes of massage.It’s very long,” explained the head of emergency at Palermo hospital. “And for that,you have to do an ultrasound. But, provided that we take turns on this muscle that doesn’t seem to be leaving, the whole team must work like clockwork.” The process involved pausing briefly for ultrasound scans to assess the heart’s response, then instantly resuming compressions.
The Role of advanced Technology
Giada’s prosperous resuscitation was not solely due to the dedication of the medical team. It was also made possible by Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (EMCO), a life support technique the hospital adopted just one year prior. EMCO provides oxygenation to the body when the heart and lungs are unable to function effectively, mitigating potential damage during prolonged resuscitation. This technology allowed Giada to avoid many of the after-effects typically associated with such a severe event.
A Christmas Miracle
Remarkably, less than a month after her cardiac arrest, Giada was discharged from the hospital and is now home preparing to celebrate Christmas with her family.”She is better,much better. It will be the best christmas of his life,” her father shared with the daily newspaper, expressing immense relief.
