L“The year 2023 was marked by particularly significant immigration flows in certain OECD economies”, the international organization wrote in its report, citing in particular the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain and Australia.

“This development had positive effects on labor supply, and benefited GDP growth in general”, through the growth of the active population, continues the Paris-based institute.

Portugal, Ireland, Canada, Spain and Australia contributed the most to labor force growth, each with a contribution of more than 1.5 points, OECD statistics show.

For most of the States analysed, this contribution is much higher than the average level of contribution recorded between 2010 and 2019.

For France, the contribution of foreign-born labor to the growth of the active population was almost 0.5 points.

The global economy has been greatly affected by the increase in labor shortages, both in the eurozone and in the United States and Japan, since the Covid-19 pandemic, OECD figures released on Thursday show.

The positive or negative contribution of immigration to the economy is a topic that is regularly discussed in the context of the security and identity debate, and is the subject of many analytical works.

In 2021, the Council for Economic Analysis (CAE), an organization dependent on Matignon, declared that qualified immigration is a “benefit” to be developed for the French economy.
