Reverent silence: Paul Grüner, who owns the hotel in Karthaus, had this little wooden house built after his brother and his wife died in an avalanche.

Come to rest in a South Tyrolean monastery village and a hut in the mountains. Showing the miracles of silence to the eleven-year-old daughter. Is that really a good idea?

UOur journey into silence begins with a delay of three hours and four young Italians. They are on the train to Bolzano, on the next door. They’re all looking at their cell phone screens, watching video clips, and all have their volume turned up. Now and then they call out to each other, so loudly, as if they were sitting very far apart.

Since noon we have been hearing rasping loudspeaker announcements, shrill whistles from the train driver, defective compressed air doors. It’s late in the evening now and I have to admit that, with all my patience, I’m on the verge of banging my fist on the train table and the kids’ smartphones will fly in the face.
