Singapore Confident in India’s Future: PM Wong

by Ahmed Ibrahim

Singapore is confident in India‘s future, a belief demonstrated through consistent actions and a strong partnership, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated on Sept. 3. He highlighted opportunities for deepening cooperation in artificial intelligence, biotech, green energy, and semiconductors. Singapore has been India’s largest foreign investor for seven consecutive years, and Singapore is also India’s top trading partner within the ASEAN bloc. These robust ties are further strengthened by the significant presence of Indian enterprises within the Confederation of Indian Industry, Wong noted. Wong emphasized that such cooperation would not only create new economic avenues but also boost the dynamism and growth of asia as a whole. These sectors were also focal points during discussions in August at the third India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable. Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong led a six-minister delegation to India then, engaging with counterparts on collaborations in green energy, ammonia, hydrogen, cross-border carbon trading, and the potential establishment of a semiconductor ecosystem. These talks laid crucial groundwork for developing a roadmap to flesh out Singapore and india’s complete strategic partnership (CSP). The two countries had agreed to elevate their diplomatic ties to CSP status about a year ago, following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Singapore in september 2024.
