Though, the world number eight demonstrated remarkable composure, saving both match points and ultimately securing the set 7-6(7). He then capitalized on a break in the final set to close out the match, converting his third match point after Shelton had previously saved two.
“he played much better at the beginning, it was a tough start. But I kept fighting, played point for point and always believed in victory,” Auger-Aliassime explained. The intensity and quality of play were consistently high throughout the encounter. “I stayed cool and was happy that I found a way to leave the pitch as a winner.”
