BORDIGHERA. Tennis champion Jannik Sinner has declined the invitation to honorary citizenship of Municipality of Bordighera, a Ligurian city on the border with the Principality of Monaco where the young Jannik had grown professionally. The president of the municipal council Stefano Gnutti announced this in the evening during the council meeting.
«As per the commitment made here – he said – the day after the proposal to confer citizenship I contacted the former director of the Piatti centre, who is on excellent terms with Sinner and in fact, within a couple of days, our message It arrived and was kindly returned to sender. In a very polite way, as characteristic of Sinner, he said that he is forced to refuse, because let’s say that he is pulled by the jacket from a thousand situations and prefers to avoid.”
Despite the refusal, the Municipality still wanted to send an official document to Sinner: «Dear Jannik, we would like to thank you for the words of affection towards Bordighera that you sent to us through Luigi Bertino – we read – Even though we are sorry, we understand the reasons that today lead you not to accept honorary citizenship. Your determination to achieve further extraordinary goals requires absolute dedication, a profound spirit of sacrifice and unfortunately some painful but forced choices. Rest assured that the city of Bordighera will continue to support you, proud to have welcomed the first steps of your exceptional sporting career and happy to award you its highest recognition should, in the future, you wish to reconsider our proposal.”
