Sinner Extends Hard-Court Dominance, Advances to Cincinnati Quarterfinals

Italian star Jannik Sinner continues to demonstrate his mastery on hard courts, securing his place in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, with a 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over French qualifier Adrian Mannarino. The win extends Sinner’s remarkable winning streak on the surface to 24 matches, surpassing Novak Djokovic’s run from 2015.

Rain Delay Couldn’t Halt Sinner’s Momentum

Sinner, the defending champion, navigated a challenging match against the resilient Mannarino, overcoming a two-hour, 45-minute rain delay that interrupted play at the start of the second set. Despite not being at his peak form, the world No. 1 proved too strong for the Frenchman, securing six sets played and six sets won at this year’s tournament.

The opening set saw a moment of brilliance from Sinner, who showcased his athleticism and skill by tracking down a Mannarino smash and responding with a stunning backhand winner. “He is a very tough opponent. Very different from other opponents, not only because he is a lefty but how he hits the ball. It is very low,” Sinner explained after the match. He added that he focused on serving well and exploiting opportunities in the return games, adjusting his position to disrupt Mannarino’s precise serve on the Ad side.

Hard-Court Record and Race to Turin

With this victory, Sinner surpasses Djokovic’s 23-match hard-court winning streak from 2015, now ranking eighth all-time for this century. His last defeat on a hard court came against Carlos Alcaraz in the Beijing final last October. The 23-year-old is now 29-3 on the season, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and just eight wins away from reaching 300 career victories.

Sinner’s strong performance has also solidified his position in the race for the ATP Year-End No. 1 ranking. He recently qualified for November’s Nitto ATP Finals, joining Alcaraz, and the two are now locked in a thrilling competition for the top spot. Currently, Alcaraz holds a 1,440-point lead over Sinner in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.

Next Round and Mannarino’s Rise

Sinner will next face either 23rd seed Felix Auger-Aliassime or fellow Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in his fifth quarter-final appearance of the year. He boasts an impressive 21-match winning record against French players.

Despite the loss, Adrian Mannarino’s performance was noteworthy. The 37-year-old upset Tommy Paul to reach the fourth round, marking his best result at a Masters 1000 event since reaching the quarterfinals in Cincinnati two years ago. As a result of his strong showing, Mannarino has climbed 18 spots to No. 71 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.
