Colombo: Former President Maithripala Sirisena has apologized to the country’s minority Catholic community for the 2019 Easter bombings in Sri Lanka. On April 21, 2019, more than 270 people were killed in a series of suicide bombings in three Catholic churches and hotels led by the National Tawheed Jamaat.

Nine Chavares exploded that day. Sirisena apologized while speaking at the Freedom Party’s political gathering the other day. On January 12, the Supreme Court ordered Sirisena to pay 100 million Sri Lankan rupees as compensation to the victims. If the money is not paid, the former president will face jail for contempt of court. He had accused the commission of inquiry appointed by Sirisena after the terrorist attack for failing to prevent the attack.

However, Sirisena’s stance is that the then Defense Department created the conditions for security breaches and attacks. Sirisena also stated the other day that he will contest in the 2024 presidential election.
