Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Saluki Takeover Tour Southern Illinois has become a defining moment for the region, blending student recruitment, alumni engagement and community outreach into a monthlong celebration of local pride and academic opportunity. From March 31 to April 23, 2026, university leaders crisscrossed all 17 Southern Illinois counties, visiting high schools, hosting receptions, and reinforcing SIU’s commitment to keeping students and talent at home.

This year’s tour stands out for its scale and impact. Undergraduate admissions teams, led by Director Sarah Jiter, visited 51 high schools in just 14 days, engaging directly with more than 300 students and 51 counselors, principals, and superintendents. As of late April, the initiative had already yielded results: 305 students from the region enrolled for the fall 2026 semester, a testament to the power of direct, on-the-ground outreach. “Southern Illinois is our home, and this tour is about investing in its future,” Chancellor Austin A. Lane said. “Every visit, conversation, and connection reflects our commitment to creating opportunities for students right here in our region.”

What began as a labor of love has grown into a regional movement. The tour’s road map covered 1,932.5 miles, roughly the distance from SIU Carbondale to Los Angeles, with Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Wendell Williams adding another 909 miles through visits to schools on eighth-grade nights. Combined, the team logged 2,841.5 miles—more than the cross-country drive from coast to coast. The sheer scale of the effort underscores the university’s dedication to making higher education accessible and aspirational for local students.

From High Schools to Community Hubs: A Month of Connection

The Saluki Takeover Tour Southern Illinois was not just about recruiting students; it was about building a network. The initiative included visits to approximately 55 high schools, where Chancellor Lane and admissions representatives met with students, counselors, and educators. At each stop, the team surprised admitted students with “Put a Lid on It” moments, celebrating their decisions to attend SIU and reinforcing the university’s reputation as a place where local students can thrive.

In addition to school visits, the SIU Foundation hosted five Chancellor’s Receptions across the region, bringing together alumni, students, and community members for evenings of connection and university updates. These events took place at iconic Southern Illinois locations:

Pyramid Acres Marina
  • Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center (Makanda) – March 31, 2026, with nearly 300 attendees
  • Pyramid Acres Marina at Lake of Egypt (Marion) – April 7, with nearly 150 attendees
  • DoubleTree by Hilton in Mount Vernon – April 16, hosted by SIU alumni Mike and Hope Carbonaro, with over 50 guests
  • 62 Social House in Carterville – April 21, welcoming nearly 250 attendees for the venue’s first official event
  • 1860 Public House in Red Bud – April 23, with nearly 70 alumni, students, and community members

At each reception, Chancellor Lane highlighted SIU’s recent achievements, including its designation as a Research 1 university and an Opportunity University—one of only 21 institutions nationwide to hold both Carnegie Classification honors. SIU Foundation CEO Matt Kupec emphasized the impact of donor support, noting that one in five students receives a scholarship because of donor generosity.

More Than Recruitment: Strengthening the Region’s Future

Beyond the numbers, the tour is about relationships. University leaders met with community partners, local officials, and education leaders to strengthen collaborations and expand opportunities for students. Chancellor Lane addressed concerns raised years ago about students leaving Southern Illinois for college, framing the tour as part of a long-term strategy to keep talent in the region.

“We heard concerns years ago about students leaving this area for college,” Lane said. “We made a commitment to change that, and this tour is part of that work.” The initiative reflects a broader Saluki Takeover Tour, which has expanded its reach each year with stops in Chicago, Springfield, Texas, Florida, St. Louis, Hollywood, Indianapolis, and Washington, D.C. The tour is also a key component of the Imagine SIU 2030 fundraising campaign, which has raised more than $467 million toward its $500 million goal.

In the most recent fiscal year, the SIU Foundation awarded over $5.6 million in scholarships to more than 2,100 students, demonstrating the direct impact of community investment on student success.
