Six band members The Black Engine they will meet again Thursday, July 20 to perform together in a solidarity jazz concert in Sarrià de Ter. It is about Jazz at Juncs, an activity that will raise funds for the Joncs Foundation. They are the trumpet player and vocalist of the group, Ricard Gili, the drummer, Carles Gili, the sax player, Toni Gili, the clarinet player, Oriol Romaní, the guitar player, Pep Rius, and the double bass player, Jordi Casanovas. The Black Locomotive said goodbye to the stage in 2021 after more than 50 years in operation and this will be the first time that part of the band will be back on stage together. The price of the Jazz at Joncs concert is 20 euros.

The Catalan big band La Locomotora Negra was founded in 1971 in Barcelona. Ricard and Cales Gili, sons of the architect Joaquim Gili, mixed jazz and miniature trains to create the musical formation that was active for five decades. In its beginnings, there were only five components, but in 1995 it was expanded to 15 and they reached 17 in 2021 when they said goodbye to the stages.

The Black Locomotive was characteristic for the jazz style on the more popular side and has had as references orchestras such as those of Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Now, six of the members of the formation will meet again on the stage in the charity concert Jazz als Joncs. It will take place on July 20 at eight in the evening, in the multipurpose room of the Fundació Els Joncs, in Sarrià de Ter.

In fact, the building where the foundation is located is the work of the father of the two founders: Joaquim Gili. The architect was in charge of designing the School of Industrial Mastery in Sarrià de Ter and construction began in 1968. The changes in the educational plan of the Ministry of Education in the early 70’s meant that the works were stopped and the building could never be opened. In 1989 the foundation bought the property and rehabilitated the industrial buildings and the classrooms. Today it is the headquarters of the foundation and also an occupational center.

The musician Ricard Gili has emphasized that participating in the concert is “a double reason for joy” for the band, since the building is one of the “last works” designed by Joaquim Gili. For his part, the patron of the Fundació Els Joncs, Jesús Candel, has explained that the concert aims to open the organization to the people and “get closer to the people”. That is why he has invited the neighbors to use the room.
