Škoda is poised to expand its electric vehicle lineup beyond SUVs, with the Vision O concept offering a compelling glimpse into the future of the brand’s iconic station wagon body style – expected around 2030.
The Czech automaker is currently enjoying success with its SUV offerings, with two additional models slated for release next year. Though, Škoda recognizes the enduring appeal of the station wagon, a body type where it currently leads the European market. The Vision O, unveiled recently in Valencia, spain, serves as a “harbinger of the future station wagon,” according to company representatives.
A Design That Captivates
The concept car instantly draws attention, even amidst the bustling harbor setting near Valencia’s former Formula 1 circuit. Observers in Spain were clearly impressed, with many pausing to examine the white, futuristic vehicle adorned with a prominent “Vision O” badge. “Škoda Auto has clearly hit the nail on the head with the design,” one observer noted, highlighting the concept’s immediate appeal.
While not a direct preview of an electric Octavia or Superb, the Vision O – measuring 4850 mm in length – occupies a space between the two popular models. More significantly, Škoda is moving towards a new “multi-energy platform” for its future vehicles. This means potential customers may have a choice beyond a fully electric powertrain, with options including hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, dependent on evolving European legislation.
Interior Innovation: A Panoramic Display and Sustainable Materials
The Vision O’s design extends beyond its exterior, showcasing a radical interior focused on sustainability and advanced technology. The most striking feature is a 1.2-meter-wide panoramic display, a departure from the windshield projection systems seen in some competitors like BMW. According to Daniel Hájek, the head of user interface design at Škoda, the display allows for customizable projections tailored to both driver and passenger preferences.
Beyond the expansive screen, the Vision O introduces innovative control solutions. Three rollers on the center console offer a refined take on the rotary controls found in Škoda’s superb and Kodiaq models. The concept also features an oval steering wheel and buttons with haptic feedback, representing Škoda’s commitment to blending touch-screen technology with traditional controls.
Škoda is also prioritizing sustainable materials. The “O” in the name, a senior official stated, refers not to Octavia, but to “circularity.” Seats feature upholstery made from flat knit materials, eliminating the need for embroidery, while headrests are 3D-printed from Ultrasint TPU monomaterial. Recycled leather scraps are used for the interior and trunk flooring, with each vehicle perhaps possessing a unique color pattern due to the nature of the recycled material.
A Glimpse into the Driving experience
The Vision O prototype, built on the foundation of a plug-in hybrid Superb, offers a limited but intriguing driving experience. While a short test route and speed restrictions prevented a comprehensive evaluation, the concept provided a tangible sense of its potential. The doors, operated via a smartphone app or touchscreen, open against each other, creating a dramatic entrance – a feature unlikely to appear in the production model due to safety regulations.
The vehicle’s 650-liter trunk expands to over 1700 liters with the rear seats folded, demonstrating Škoda’s commitment to practicality. The Vision O perfectly embodies the importance of the station wagon body style to the brand, a segment where Škoda currently holds a leading position in the European market.
Looking ahead, Škoda plans to introduce the Epiq SUV and a seven-seater model based on the Vision 7S concept, alongside a hybrid Octavia, further diversifying its electric and electrified offerings.
