“Research shows that it is better for digestive health to sleep on your left side. When we sleep on our left side, the stomach and gastric juices remain lower than the esophagus, thereby reducing heartburn and indigestion,” said Ali.

The same thing was expressed by sleep expert and CEO of Mattressnextday Matin Seelay. According to him, sleeping on your right side can increase the risk of stomach acid flowing back into your esophagus.

This can be bad news for people with GERD or acid reflux. Luckily, sleeping on your left side is much better for people with the condition, which has been shown to improve digestion.

“Sleeping on your left side can promote better digestion,” explains Seelay.

“This allows gravity to facilitate the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine, which can aid proper digestion and reduce the chances of acid reflux,” he adds.

Sleeping on your left side is also believed to help keep the stomach lower than the esophagus. Thus reducing the possibility of stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus.
