A significant change is coming for frequent flyers: Mastercard holders in Slovakia will soon lose their complimentary access to airport lounges in Bratislava, Prague, and vienna. The benefit, long enjoyed by many travelers, is being phased out as Mastercard adjusts its partnerships and benefit structures, with the final date for Bratislava access set for December 31, 2025.
Thousands of Slovak travelers are bracing for this shift, confirmed by Mastercard but currently lacking specific details regarding replacement programs. The change coincides with a period of growth for Bratislava Airport, which is reporting record passenger numbers and expanding its flight network.
Bratislava Airport Leads the Change
The initial impact will be felt at Bratislava’s Pearl Lounge. According to a statement from airport spokesperson Veronika demovičová, access for Mastercard holders is guaranteed only through the end of 2025, coinciding with the expiration of the airport’s contract with Menzies Aviation, the British company taking over lounge operations starting June 1, 2025. Menzies Aviation will ultimately determine future partnerships and benefits offered at the lounge.
“Preferred entry to the Pearl lounge at Bratislava airport can already be used by holders of Priority Pass, LoungeKey or Dragon Pass cards,” Demovičová stated. “Holders of selected Mastercard credit cards can use the Bratislava Pearl lounge until 12/31/2025.”
Expanding Options, But at a Cost?
Mastercard maintains it is indeed working to expand customer options through its LoungeKey service, which provides access to over a thousand lounges globally. However, a company representative indicated that maintaining free access is unlikely. “In the most optimistic scenario, the client will receive a certain number of free entries per year, but a model in which a fee will be paid for entry, similar to Priority Pass or Dragon Pass, is more likely,” one analyst noted.
Prague and Vienna to Follow
The impact extends beyond Bratislava.ČSOB banka has already alerted its clients that the changes will also affect lounges in Prague and Vienna. “From January 1, 2026, Mastercard will end the provision of discounted access to the airport lounge in Bratislava. From July 1, 2026, the same change will also affect the lounges in Prague and Vienna,” the bank stated on its website. “This adjustment is the result of changes in mastercard benefits and does not concern the decision of ČSOB.”
