SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) men’s golf team begins play Monday at the Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational, marking a return to competition after a recent stretch of preparation. The two-day tournament, hosted by Houston Christian University (HCU), will be held at the Sweetwater Country Club, a par-71 course spanning 6,689 yards. This event represents a key opportunity for the Lions to build momentum as they navigate the spring season and continue their pursuit of a Southland Conference championship.
The field at the Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational is robust, featuring 14 teams from across the country. Alongside SLU and HCU, fellow Southland Conference members Latest Orleans, UIW, Nicholls, and East Texas A&M will compete. The tournament likewise welcomes North Dakota, Weber State, Central Michigan, Missouri State, Howard, Prairie View, Midland College, and Texas Southern. Individual golfers from Rice and Houston will also participate, adding another layer of competition to the event. Live scoring throughout the tournament will be available on the SLU athletics website, www.LionSports.net.
Lions Set to Tee Off with Familiar Faces
Southeastern will be paired with Central Michigan, the University of New Orleans (UNO), and Missouri State for the first two rounds on Monday. Representing SLU on the course will be David Marsh, Lorenzo Palmieri, Griffin Dorr, Noah Bumgarner, and Colby Sullivan. Marsh comes into the tournament having led the Lions with a 14th-place finish at last week’s Gulf Coast Collegiate, demonstrating consistent performance and leadership within the team.
The team’s lineup also includes Sullivan and Dorr, both of whom were part of the starting five at last year’s Colin Montgomerie Invitational. In 2025, both players tied for 26th place, with Sullivan notably carding a final-round 69. Their experience at Sweetwater Country Club could prove valuable as they navigate the course again this year.
Building on Last Year’s Performance
SLU finished fifth overall at the 2025 Colin Montgomerie Invitational, a result the team aims to improve upon this year. The tournament provides a valuable benchmark for assessing the team’s progress and identifying areas for continued development. The competitive field and challenging course conditions will undoubtedly test the Lions’ skills, and resilience.
The Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational is named in honor of the renowned Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie, a highly decorated professional with eight European Tour Order of Merit titles. Hosting the event at Sweetwater Country Club provides a quality venue for collegiate golfers to showcase their talent and compete at a high level.
Looking Ahead
Following the conclusion of the Colin Montgomerie-HCU Invitational, the Southeastern Louisiana men’s golf team will have a couple of weeks to regroup and refine their game before traveling to Dickson, Tennessee, to compete in the Austin Peay Intercollegiate on March 23-24. This upcoming tournament will continue to provide opportunities for the Lions to gain valuable experience and build towards their goals for the remainder of the season.
