Bay Area Events Calendar: Cycling, Transit Advocacy, and Valentine’s Day Cheer Fill the Week

A diverse range of events are planned across the Bay Area this week, from cycling workshops and community repair nights to Valentine’s Day celebrations and advocacy efforts for improved public transit. Residents have opportunities to engage in community building, skill-sharing, and civic participation.

Cycling Takes Center Stage

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is hosting several events geared towards cyclists of all levels. On Monday, February 9, from 6-7 p.m., a “Smart City Cycling” presentation will address the concerns of those intimidated by urban traffic, as well as offer skill-building opportunities for experienced riders. Participants can register for a Zoom link to attend.

For those interested in hands-on learning, a “Bike It Forward Community Repair Night” will be held on Tuesday, February 10, from 5-7 p.m. at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition headquarters at 1720 Market Street. Volunteers will rehabilitate donated and abandoned bicycles, providing them to individuals in need.

Two events on Thursday, February 12, cater to different cycling interests. A family-friendly “Thursday Night Ride” will depart from Pleasant Hill BART at 5:45 p.m., following the Iron Horse Trail and exploring local neighborhoods. Registration is available on Facebook. Simultaneously, “Intro to Biking in SF with Bay Wheels” will offer a Zoom-based class for those looking to integrate cycling more fully into their city lives, from 6-7 p.m. Participants can register for a Zoom link.

Rounding out the week’s cycling offerings, a “Woman and Non-Binary Morning Ride” will take place on Friday, February 13, from 7:15-8:45 a.m., starting at McLaren Lodge, 501 Stanyan Street. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is organizing this socially distanced ride.

Beyond the Bike: Community and Civic Engagement

The week’s events extend beyond cycling. On Saturday, February 14, celebrate Valentine’s Day with free photos on a decorated cable car from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2853 Hyde Street.

Advocates for improved public transit will gather on Sunday, February 15, from 2-4 p.m. at the Lake Merritt Amphitheater. Connect Bay Area is hosting a signature-gathering event to support a ballot measure aimed at enhancing regional transit options. Volunteers will receive training and petition supplies.

Looking Ahead

The diverse range of events this week highlights the Bay Area’s commitment to community, sustainability, and civic engagement. Residents are encouraged to participate and contribute to the vibrant fabric of the region.
