Belgians now have another option for secure digital identification when accessing government services. Smart-ID, an authentication app originally developed in Estonia, has recently been officially approved for leverage with platforms like MyPension and MyMinfin. This adds to the existing system, itsme, offering citizens a more convenient way to verify their identity online using just their smartphone. The introduction of Smart-ID aims to streamline access to essential services and enhance digital security for citizens across the country.
For years, itsme has been a popular choice for Belgians seeking a simpler way to log in to various online platforms, from government websites to banking services. The appeal lies in its convenience – eliminating the need for usernames, passwords, and physical security tokens. Now, Smart-ID provides a comparable alternative, built on similar principles of digital identity verification. Belgium is the first country outside the Baltic states to officially support the app, signaling a growing international recognition of its security and usability. The core function of both systems is to securely link your national identity card to your smartphone, allowing for verified logins without exposing sensitive personal data.
Setting Up Your Smart-ID Account: A Step-by-Step Guide
Getting started with Smart-ID involves a straightforward, three-step process. First, you’ll need to download the app from either the Google Play Store (for Android devices) or the Apple App Store (for iOS). Once installed, the app will prompt you to create an account. This initial setup requires establishing two distinct PIN codes, each between four and twelve characters long. These PINs will be crucial for both registering your identity and confirming future login attempts, adding an extra layer of security to the process.
The second step requires a computer, your Belgian identity card, and a card reader. You’ll need to access the Smart-ID portal at portal.smart-id.com and connect your card reader to your computer. Crucially, you must have the correct software installed – Trust1Connector – to facilitate communication between your card reader and the Smart-ID system. Once connected, the portal will ask for permission to process your identity card data. After granting permission and selecting your card reader, you’ll be prompted to enter the PIN code associated with your identity card, which can be found on the letter you received from the government. The Smart-ID app will then generate a registration code that you’ll need to submit through the portal. Finally, confirm your registration using both your identity card PIN and the PIN you created within the Smart-ID app. Upon successful completion, your account will be valid for five years.
Logging In with Smart-ID: A Seamless Experience
Once your account is set up, using Smart-ID to log in to participating platforms is a straightforward process. Since March, the app has been validated for use on Belgian government websites. When logging into a service like MyPension, you’ll see Smart-ID listed alongside itsme and MyGov.be within the CSAM (Central System for Authentication and Authorisation Management) login window. Selecting “log in with Smart-ID” will display a QR code on your screen. Simply scan this code with the Smart-ID app on your smartphone and confirm the login attempt using your PIN. Currently, biometric verification methods, such as fingerprint scanning, are not supported for confirming login attempts, but may be added in future updates.
