Will Smith Set to Return for Sharks Against Red wings in 2026
The San Jose Sharks are poised to welcome back star winger Will Smith for his 2026 season debut this Friday, marking a important boost to the team’s offensive capabilities. Smith has been sidelined since Dec. 13 due to an upper-body injury.
The Sharks (24-19-3) have navigated Smith’s absence with a record of 8-5-0, but his return is expected to elevate their performance even further. Prior to his injury, Smith was a key offensive contributor, ranking second on the team with 29 points – comprised of 12 goals and 17 assists – in just 33 games. He frequently played alongside center Macklin Celebrini, forming a potent offensive pairing.
To make room for Smith on the active roster, the Sharks have placed forward Ty Dellandrea on injured reserve. Dellandrea is suffering from a lower-body injury and will be unavailable for competition until after the Olympics.
Head coach Ryan Warsofsky has announced the following lines for Friday’s game:
- Regenda-Celebrini-Smith
- Eklund-Wennberg-toffoli
- Graf-Misa-Chernyshov
- Goodrow-Ostapchuk-Gaudette
On defense, the pairings will be:
- Orlov-Klingberg
- Ferraro-Liljegren
- Dickinson-Leddy
Yaroslav Askarov will start in goal for the Sharks. Several players will be sitting out, including Ryan Reaves, Jeff Skinner, and Vincent Iorio. Warsofsky also indicated plans for revamped power play units, though specific details remain undisclosed.
Rookie Misa will be playing in his first set of back-to-back games, presenting an opportunity for increased ice time and growth. Additionally, Vincent Desharnais and Shakir Mukhamadullin are making progress in their recovery and could be available for the upcoming back-to-back games in Florida.
The Detroit Red Wings (28-16-4) will host the Sharks at Little Caesars Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 PM PT. Fans can watch the game live on NBC Sports California and listen on the Sharks Audio Network.
