SMU basketball continued its impressive early-season form with a resounding 106-60 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday night, moving to 5-0 on the year. The Mustangs showcased a balanced offensive attack, led by a season-high 23 points from Jaron pierre Jr., and a dominant performance on both ends of the court.
Mustangs Explode in First Half
The game quickly tilted in SMU’s favor early on, sparked by a three-pointer from senior guard B.J.Edwards just over two and a half minutes into the contest.This basket ignited a decisive 24-4 run for the Mustangs, pushing thier lead to 27-9 midway through the first half. Pierre capitalized during the run, contributing two three-pointers and 10 total points.
Balanced Scoring and Efficient Shooting
SMU’s offensive prowess wasn’t limited to pierre.Corey Washington and Jermaine O’Neal Jr. each added 15 points, while Samet Yigitoglu chipped in with 11. Edwards finished with 11 points, nine assists, and three steals, showcasing his all-around impact. The mustangs shot an efficient 57% from the field (37 of 65) and connected on 44% of their three-point attempts (12 of 27). They also outscored the Lions 20-10 from the free-throw line, demonstrating their consistency at the charity stripe.
Miller’s Double-Double Streak Continues
Senior guard Boopie miller continued his stellar play,recording 15 points and 10 assists for his second consecutive double-double – his sixth of the season. Miller, who previously posted 23 points and a career-high tying 12 assists in a narrow win over Butler on Saturday, is proving to be a dynamic force for the Mustangs. “He’s really elevating his game,” a senior official stated. “His ability to score and distribute is making us a tough team to defend.”
UAPB Struggles to Keep Pace
arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-6) struggled to contain SMU’s offensive onslaught, falling to their eighth consecutive loss dating back to last season. Trevon Payton led the Lions with 13 points, while Jaquan Scott fouled out with 12 and Milhan Charles added 10. The Lions were unable to match SMU’s shooting efficiency,finishing at just 34.3% from the field.
Enfield’s Mustangs Reach Century Mark Again
This victory marks the second time this season SMU has surpassed the 100-point mark, and the seventh under second-year head coach Andy enfield. The Mustangs scored 61 points in the second half alone, their highest-scoring half since December 17, 2015. Enfield now has seven 100-point games during his tenure at SMU, tying him with John Shumate for seventh all-time in program history.
