SNAP Benefits at Risk as Government Shutdown Looms Over Millions
As the federal government shutdown continues, the future of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits hangs in the balance for millions of Americans, with states like Ohio bracing for immediate impact. The potential expiration of these vital benefits this weekend has triggered urgent concern among state officials and food banks already struggling to meet increasing demand.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine warned on Tuesday, during a visit to Cuyahoga County, that the consequences will be felt swiftly. “Its going to have impact here in the State of Ohio as soon as this coming week,” he stated. Approximately 1.4 million Ohio residents rely on SNAP, and nearly 200,000 in Cuyahoga County alone depend on the program. DeWine further emphasized the broader implications, noting that federal funding for both SNAP and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is at risk.
The crisis isn’t limited to Ohio. Louisiana, facing a similar situation, is exploring options to reallocate funds to cover the potential SNAP shortfall, at least temporarily. When asked if Ohio would consider a similar approach, DeWine responded, “We’re looking at it. We’re looking to see what our options are. I don’t have anything to announce today, but we’re certainly, certainly looking at this.”
The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is already preparing for a surge in need. November is historically its busiest month, but the looming expiration of SNAP benefits is expected to exacerbate the situation. “We have noticed a lot of traffic on our website, lots of people seeking out where to get help,” said Karen Pozna of the Food Bank. The organization is anticipating a need to secure at least 20% more food to meet the increased demand, and its resource team is actively identifying potential vendors.
Local officials are also pressing for a swift resolution. On Monday, the Cleveland City Council sent letters to Governor DeWine and Ohio Senators Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted, urging them to end the shutdown and advocate for the use of contingency funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to maintain benefit distribution. The council’s letter underscored the potential for widespread hunger if benefits are interrupted.
Both Senators Moreno and husted have co-sponsored the keep SNAP Funded Act of 2025, introduced by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), which aims to provide temporary funding for the program during the shutdown. Though, a vote on the bill has not yet been scheduled.
Senator Husted released a statement affirming his commitment to reopening the government, stating, “I will continue to vote to reopen the government, and I urge my Senate Democratic colleagues to do the same. But for now, we cannot allow millions of innocent Americans to go without the benefits they rely on.”
Senator Moreno’s Communications Director, reagan McCarthy, countered that the focus should be on Democrats ending the shutdown, stating,”The Democrats on City Council should be calling on National Democrats to end the Schumer Shutdown by voting for the bipartisan continuing resolution.Regrettably, members of their own party are using government employees and needy families as political pawns, which is why senator Moreno has a bill that would immediately fund SNAP benefits while Democrats keep the government shutdown.”
In the meantime, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is directing those in need of assistance to
