Bowen Yang to Exit Saturday Night Live Mid-Season, Reportedly Cites New Opportunities

Saturday Night Live is bracing for another cast departure, with reports emerging Friday that Bowen Yang will leave the show following this weekend’s episode. The news comes as a surprise to many, given Yang’s recent statements expressing his continued commitment to the long-running sketch comedy program.

The unexpected announcement follows a period of significant change for SNL, with several cast members departing earlier in the year as part of a larger restructuring initiative led by showrunner Lorne Michaels. Emil Wakim, Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, Heidi Gardner, John Higgins, and Ego Nwodim all exited the show ahead of Season 51. Michaels reportedly considered retaining only four cast members, but ultimately welcomed back a core group including Michael Che, Colin Jost, Kenan Thompson, and Bowen Yang, alongside a slate of new talent: Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Ben Marshall, Kam Patterson, and Veronika Slowikowska.

Sources close to the situation first reported the news to TMZ on Friday, sending shockwaves through the show’s fanbase. According to these sources, Yang’s final appearance will coincide with this Saturday’s episode, hosted by his Wicked co-star, Ariana Grande, with Cher serving as the musical guest.

The departure is particularly surprising in light of Yang’s comments to People magazine in September. “I’ve always gone by the instinct of, do I have more to do?” he stated at the time. “And I feel like I do. Even Lorne and I talked about it and Lorne was like, ‘You have more to do,’ and that means a lot because I even confessed to him. I was like, ‘I feel the audience is maybe getting sick of me.’ And he was like, ‘That’s not true. There’s more for you to do. I need you.’” The shift in sentiment raises questions about the factors influencing Yang’s decision.

Yang joined SNL as a writer in 2018 and was promoted to the cast the following year. Over the past seven years, he has become a prominent figure on the show, earning five Primetime Emmy nominations – one for writing and four for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Simultaneously, his career has expanded beyond Studio 8H, with starring roles in films like Wicked and Wicked: For Good, and as the co-host of the popular podcast Las Culturistas with Matt Rogers.

As of Friday evening, Yang has not publicly addressed the reports of his departure. If confirmed, SNL will be losing a highly versatile and critically acclaimed performer. The circumstances surrounding his exit remain unclear, but his growing success in other ventures likely played a role. Fans are left to speculate about the future of the show and the impact of Yang’s absence.
