On February 28, President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) Rovshan Najaf discussed issues of cooperation in the gas sector with Chairman of the Board of Gazprom PJSC Alexey Miller, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazprom.

It should be noted that Gazprom’s subsidiary, Gazprom Export LLC, had a contract with SOCAR for the purchase and sale of gas for the period from November 15, 2022 to April 1, 2023. The talk was about the supply of up to 1 billion cubic meters of gas from the Russian Federation to Azerbaijan during the specified period. In fact, this contract was fully executed in 2022, but in 2023 there were no supplies of Russian gas.

Let us remind you that Gazprom has had a representative office in Baku since December 2018.

SOCAR has been cooperating with Gazprom since 2000. In 2015, there were attempts to arrange supplies of Russian gas for the Azerbaijan methanol plant, but the purchase of gas did not last long. Another attempt was made on November 21, 2017, when a contract was signed between SOCAR and Gazprom Export for 1.6 billion cubic meters of gas. In 2017, Azerbaijan bought 349 million cubic meters of gas under this contract, in 2018 – 999 million cubic meters, but in the fall of 2018 it suspended the implementation of this agreement after the commissioning of TANAP and the launch of full-scale development of Shah Deniz.

Since 2019, cooperation between Gazprom and SOCAR has been determined by the parties’ periodic need to exchange gas.
