In a daily newspaper published on February 13, the report entitled “four children, crippled wife and athai Sagare Shafiqul” Social Welfare Minister Dr. Deepu Moni is visible. Salma Akhtar, a crippled woman, was handed over a prosthetic leg at the National Disability Development Foundation at Suvarna Bhavan in the capital on Thursday (March 21) in the presence of the minister. At this time, the minister assured to stand by Salma Begum’s family.

After coming to the notice of the said report, under the immediate direction of the Minister of Social Welfare, the National Handicapped Development Foundation contacted Shafiqul Islam and arranged for his crippled wife Salma Akhtar to get a prosthetic leg from the Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Center for the Physically Handicapped (ERCPH). Apart from this, Salma Akhtar has been given a one-time grant of Tk 10,000 from the National Handicapped Development Foundation.

Salma Akhtar’s leg was broken when she was hit by a private car while crossing the road in Naya Paltan of the capital. Later that leg had to be amputated. Her husband Shafiqul Islam drives a rickshaw in Dhaka city. Their village home is in Kishoreganj district. Mohammad Zakir Hossain, senior information officer of the Ministry of Social Welfare, has given this information.
